VULCANO — House in Aeolian Islands

VULCANO

— House in Aeolian Islands

A house in the Aeolian Islands, in a context that dominates the archipelago with a panoramic view. This is where the intervention of Elisa Ossino Studio in Vulcano was born, in a complex that dates back to the 1960s, where the characteristics of the place guided the design idea of working on the relationship between interiors and exteriors, giving ample space to the threshold that puts them in communication with each other. The project aimed to recompose in a single living area, open to the terrace by a large window, the original architectural design that saw the front fragmented into micro rooms. The sleeping area was dislocated to the rear, with the identification of two bedrooms with hallways and services. The use of aeolian lime on the surfaces and the resin that uniform the flooring contribute to the brightness of the rooms, which stand as a monochromatic white box, in which a light spreads that is in close relationship with the outside. Small, discreet niches carved into the walls define a soft chiaroscuro play, indulged by the curved lines described by the openings between rooms. The arch, a recurring element in Sicilian architecture, is introduced to scan the spaces of this Aeolian house, with the intention of making the passage between rooms even more harmonious, as well as the relationship between spaces. The doors are concealed, in the thickness of the walls. The built-in closets were made in the hallways, and have a lime textured finish. Natural materials were also used in the terrace, where architecture ideally merges with landscape.
